As a long-standing partner to the West Virginia Parkways Authority, HNTB is serving as architect- and engineer-of-record on a groundbreaking transportation architecture solution, the first of its kind in the state.

Transforming the Turnpike

Collaborating with WVPA from the project's first conception, HNTB led the design of three state-of-the-art facilities that will be situated along the West Virginia Turnpike. Upon completion, the plazas will create a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers and generate a sustainable source of revenue for the WVPA to fund maintenance operations and other future improvements for the tollway.

Details of Design

The HNTB-designed facilities combine functionality and adaptability with an engaging layout flexible enough to meet the ever-changing needs of the traveling public. Each world-class plaza will provide motorists with fueling, EV charging, restaurants, restroom facilities, lounge spaces and truck parking.

In homage to WVPA’s 1950s-era Glass House facility, the plaza concepts incorporate large amounts of curtainwall in order to capture West Virginia’s panoramic views. The structures are left exposed with high ceilings to create a lofty, airy space that further enhances the views of the outdoors. Large pavilion spaces will house retail, local crafts, tourist information and food services for travelers.

Inspired by the rugged beauty of West Virginia, these facilities incorporate materials and spaces designed to create a sense of calm and peace. Natural materials indigenous to the area are incorporated in the interior, including recycled or reclaimed wood as well as a wide selection of wood and leather furniture.

The facilities are meant to evoke a mountain resort atmosphere. On the exterior, massing and broken-up roof lines are used to create visual interest and high canopies echo the interior volume of the spaces. Natural materials are also incorporated to help integrate the structures into their settings.
