HNTB is providing project development services for Dorchester County’s US Highway 17A Widening Project. This project is a key initiative under Dorchester County’s transportation sales tax program and aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety by widening US Highway 17A from Research Center Drive to Greenwave Boulevard, covering approximately 6.5 miles.
As part of this effort, HNTB is responsible for developing preliminary road and bridge plans, National Environmental Policy Act documentation, environmental permitting, geotechnical engineering, investigations, right-of-way plans, right-of-way acquisition, final construction plans and other related services.
The planned improvements aim to enhance traffic flow, safety and accessibility for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians. The project will add a five-foot concrete sidewalk on the northern side of the roadway and a twelve-foot shared-use pathway on the southern side to ensure safe routes for non-motorized traffic. Additionally, the project will expand the existing two lanes to include additional travel lanes and a 15-foot center turn lane, and the bridge over the Ashley River will be replaced and widened to accommodate increased traffic.
