After the Texas Department of Transporation (TxDOT) developed an AI chatbot to enable staff to access critical resources and information more efficiently, specifically related to the use of the Texas Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) Handbook, the DOT’s Transportation Planning and Programming Division partnered with HNTB to lead all AI support efforts for the chatbot initiative.  

Guiding users through every stage of implementation, HNTB designed a comprehensive onboarding and training program supported by a structured adoption framework. The approach centered on helping TxDOT staff understand the chatbot’s capabilities and integrate it seamlessly into their daily workflows. 

To ensure success, HNTB built awareness of the tool, developed an adoption strategy, created training materials and oversaw user onboarding, while also providing ongoing support to drive long-term effectiveness. 

As TxDOT continues to leverage AI, the chatbot initiative is enabling staff to access information more efficiently, adapt quickly to new tools and improve the consistency of training and onboarding.
