A first-of-its-kind concept for U.S. airports, the Express Curbsides at Tampa International Airport (TPA) have doubled curbside capacity and transformed the passenger experience. These dedicated facilities allow travelers with carry-on luggage to bypass ticketing and baggage claim, moving directly from curb to security. By streamlining the journey for carry-on passengers, the Express Curbsides also eases congestion for those with checked baggage and provides a dedicated space for passengers using ride-sharing services, resulting in a smoother, more efficient experience for everyone who passes through TPA.

Long-Term Partnership, Lasting Solutions

The Express Curbsides initiative emerged from the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority (HCAA) and TPA’s 2012 Master Plan — a forward-looking strategy to accommodate growing passenger volumes and evolving traveler needs. As part of this effort, it was discovered that nearly half of TPA’s passengers travel with carry-on only luggage, revealing an opportunity for a dedicated curbside experience that would increase capacity for the entire airport.

As a close partner to TPA and HCAA since the master planning phase, HNTB served as architect- and engineer-of-record for the Express Curbsides program. The project team leveraged a progressive design-build model to address complex site constraints, maintain full airport operations during construction and deliver a solution that integrates seamlessly with TPA’s infrastructure and future plans.

Intuitive Spaces, Elevated Passenger Journeys

The Express Curbsides are divided into two sides — Red Side and Blue Side. Each side features eight dedicated lanes, four for arrivals and four for departures, physically separated from standard traffic to ensure continuous flow and improved safety. New vertical circulation buildings on each side connect carry-on only passengers directly to the Main Terminal’s transfer level, streamlining their path from curb to gate.

Clear signage, distinct entrances and consistent messaging guide travelers and drivers. Architectural elements — tall glass facades, open-air spaces and interior motifs inspired by Tampa’s natural environment — along with large-scale public art installations, create a welcoming sense of place. Open sightlines, logical circulation paths and prominent door numbering further support effortless navigation.

Seamless Connections: From Express Curbsides to Airside D

The Express Curbsides are more than a present-day innovation of the passenger experience; they are a strategic investment in the airport’s future. As part of an expansion that adds over 65,000 square feet to the facility, the Red Express Curbsides addition also integrates an advanced baggage handling system and an expansion of TPA’s Automated People Mover, directly supporting the upcoming Airside D international terminal. This expansion includes a larger transfer level on the third floor of the Main Terminal and a dedicated shuttle lobby, ensuring seamless connectivity for future international and domestic travelers.
