Runway 9C/27C at O’Hare Airport

Runway 9C/27C is the second-longest at O’Hare International Airport, sitting at 11,245-feet long by 200-feet wide and was built to meet the demand to accommodate larger planes such as the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 787-800 as well as other larger cargo aircraft. HNTB served as lead designer of the runway for the Chicago Department of Aviation, which consists of over 800,000 square yards of concrete pavement, the equivalent of 870 Olympic pools of soil, 36 miles of drainage pipe, and 236 miles of lighting and fiber optic cable. Overall, the impressive, new 9C/27C runway boosts landing capacity at one of the world’s busiest airports and its strategic location supports O’Hare’s ongoing terminal expansion plans.
