HNTB was the prime consultant for the reconstruction of the 3-Trails Crossing Memorial Highway, convergence of interstates 470, 435 and U.S. Highway 71 and seven other interchanges and local routes.

Hired by the Missouri Department of Transportation to completely replace the dilapidated interchange, HNTB developed the interchange conceptual plans, preliminary roadway, bridge and right-of-way plans and all final roadway plans. These plans included traffic control and construction sequencing to keep lanes open, final bridge design and geotechnical services for new bridges and all retaining walls and sound walls.

Project phasing allowed MoDOT to unveil a major improvement each year instead of making the public waiting seven years to see progress. HNTB also assisted with the environmental documentation and public involvement.

Completed one year ahead of schedule, the interchange has significantly reduced accidents and eased congestion. Motorists enjoy faster traffic flow and shorter commute times.

  • Designs wins over opposition
  • Phasing produces major improvements
  • Sequencing survives funding fluctuations
  • MoDOT meets its goals
