HNTB lane management system for New Jersey DOT recognized for engineering excellence

Mission critical lane management tool receives Distinguished Award from ACEC New Jersey

PARSIPPANY, N.J. (Feb. 9, 2024) – HNTB has received a Distinguished Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey for its Lane Closure Management System (LCMS) Expansion project for the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The Distinguished Award is part of ACEC New Jersey’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition that recognizes and celebrates engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of skill and ingenuity among firms throughout the state of New Jersey.

After a successful trial period for the I-80 corridor, the application was expanded to all New Jersey Interstates within NJDOT’s jurisdiction.

“Digitizing the LCMS has created significant efficiencies for lane closure management for the NJDOT,” said Stephen Dilts, HNTB’s New Jersey office leader and senior vice president. “The LCMS is now seen as mission critical to the NJDOT’s Operations unit when it comes to managing lane closure requests across all New Jersey Interstates. We are pleased ACEC New Jersey has recognized NJDOT’s successful migration to a digital infrastructure platform with the implementation of the LCMS.”

The NJDOT, which manages an annual average of 100 work zone reservation requests across the NJ interstates per week, has realized a 20-percent labor savings by implementing the LCMS application.

The LCMS is a cloud-based application that enables authorized personnel to request lane closures online. Once submitted, the requests are routed through a workflow approval process and validated against the NJDOT’s traffic management policies. Planned and active lane closures are communicated to the traveling public through the system’s automatically generated notifications that are shared on 511NJ.org.

HNTB, celebrating 60 years in New Jersey this year, will be recognized for this award at ACEC New Jersey’s 53rd Engineering Excellence Award banquet, March 13, 2024 at the Forsgate Country Club.
