Reconstruction and expansion of 38 miles of U.S. 290 provides capacity, mobility and safety for Houston commuters

US 290 is a major northwest spoke in the hub of highways that circle and radiate from downtown Houston. The $2.4 billion reconstruction of the improved US 290 brings enough new capacity to accommodate projected 2035 traffic volumes for Houston and was delivered to commuters 20 years early.

HNTB served as program management consultant to the Texas Department of Transportation on the reconstruction and expansion of 38 miles of US 290 in and around Houston. The 13 construction contracts under the program included 15 miles of freeway reconstruction, 23 miles of freeway widening and a 10-mile extension of the HOV lane.

“The partnership between TxDOT and HNTB has mitigated challenges in delivering the US 290 program improvements decades ahead of the original schedule,” stated Said Haj-Khalil, P.E., TxDOT's US 290 program manager. “It has been a successful journey toward a timely completion of the program.”
