HNTB’s design on WALK Bridge celebrated by engineering and public works consortium

Movable rail bridge recognized by ACEC, APWA and ASCE in a roadshow highlighting successful infrastructure projects

NORWALK, Conn. (Dec. 8, 2025) – During the Engineering and Public Works Roadshow (the Roadshow) event in Norwalk, CT, HNTB was recognized for its work on the WALK Bridge Replacement. HNTB served as the lead designer and engineer-of-record, completing all environmental documentation, permitting and design for the WALK Bridge Replacement, the CP243 Interlocking and Danbury Dockyard Improvements.

The Roadshow is a joint initiative of American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Public Works Association (APWA) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) that highlights successful infrastructure projects across the country. The consortium celebrated the WALK Bridge’s success during its 20th stop on the Roadshow.

The 129-year-old WALK Bridge is railroad bridge that serves 175 daily trains and 125,000 passengers on the Northeast Corridor, the nation’s busiest rail corridor. The bridge is being replaced with state-of-the-art twin vertical lift spans. The more than $1 billion project will transform rail travel along the Northeast Corridor and requires significant coordination among multiple stakeholders to build the new bridge while trains continue operating on the existing structure.

“The WALK Bridge is a fascinating project that required dozens of iterations on design to find a solution that could keep more than 150 trains moving daily and account for extensive parameters around environmental, historical and cultural requirements,” said Christian Brown, HNTB senior project director and vice president. “We are excited to be a part of the team and to partner with Connecticut DOT, Metro-North Railroad and the City of Norwalk to build on the success of this project for the community.”

Since 2022, the Roadshow has traveled more than 60,000 miles across America, highlighting exceptional infrastructure projects that improve quality of life, drive economic growth and strengthen community resilience.

During the Roadshow presentation, the past president of ACEC Connecticut, Steve Drechsler, P.E., said, “The innovative design solutions [on WALK Bridge] are setting a new design standards for what’s possible for rail infrastructure. I can’t wait to see it continue to come together.”

Other aspects of the projects and overall program will not only advance Norwalk’s railroad transportation infrastructure, but improve local roads and sidewalks for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, ensuring mobility solutions that will help the surrounding communities continue to prosper.

“HNTB has more than a century of experience designing all types of infrastructure, including movable bridges,” said Jake Argiro, HNTB’s Connecticut office leader and vice president. “Projects like these are what inspires young people to become engineers – to problem solve and to find solutions that meets the needs of not only this generation but the next.”
