Recognition highlights HNTB’s work delivering safer, reliable and connected transportation systems
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (December 12, 2025) Four HNTB projects were honored by Roads & Bridges magazine on its 2025 Top 10 Bridges and Top 10 Roads lists. The Top 10 Awards recognize the leading projects in North America. Each year, nominations are submitted to the R&B editorial staff, which determines the Top 10 lists based on project challenges, impact to a project’s region and scope of work. The winning projects were announced in the November/December award issue.
HNTB’s 2025 Honorees
Buck O’Neil Bridge, No. 2 Bridge
HNTB served as lead designer for the Buck O’Neil Bridge design-build project on behalf of the Missouri Department of Transportation and the City of Kansas City, Missouri. The new structure replaced the Broadway Bridge with a modern, multimodal Missouri River crossing that enhances regional mobility, improves safety and strengthens connections between communities on both sides of the river. It features twin plate girder bridges, direct system-to-system connections to I-35, a 10-foot barrier-separated shared-use path, improved airport access and a 4,000-square-foot public art installation celebrating baseball legend Buck O’Neil.

Gold Line Bus Rapid Transit, No. 2 Road
HNTB served as the project management consultant for METRO Transit’s Gold Line Bus Rapid Transit project, supporting project delivery, stakeholder coordination and system integration across the 10-mile corridor. The Gold Line introduces a high-capacity, reliable transit option that strengthens multimodal connectivity and improves access between residential communities and major employment centers. The project includes four new BRT-exclusive bridges, two roadway underpasses and 16 full-amenity stations.

I-69 Finish Line, Contract 5, No. 3 Road
HNTB served as owner’s representative and technical procurement adviser to the Indiana Department of Transportation, helping deliver the largest and final section of I-69 Finish Line, Indiana’s new interstate connection between Evansville and Indianapolis. The design-build contract reconstructed more than 5 miles of SR 37 to interstate standards, enhanced 8 miles of I-465, introduced four new interchanges and replaced or rehabilitated 46 bridges, substantially improving mobility, safety and long-term system performance.

Complete 540 Phase 1 (Contracts R-2721B and R-2828), No. 8 Road
HNTB supported the North Carolina Turnpike Authority as general engineering consultant for Complete 540 Phase 1, a transformative 13.5-mile segment of the Triangle Expressway expansion. The project enhances mobility, improves safety and provides a more reliable, predictable travel option for residents, commuters and freight moving across one of North Carolina’s fastest-growing regions. It includes a five-leg turbine-style interchange at I-40, 43 bridges, extensive noise walls and advanced all-electronic tolling infrastructure.
