Key hires and office expansions in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont strengthen support for regional infrastructure needs
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (Oct. 22, 2026) – HNTB is building on decades of service in Northern New England to help transportation agencies plan, manage and deliver increasingly complex infrastructure projects across the region.
HNTB’s Northern New England office has doubled its headcount since the 2010s. The firm has also expanded its presence in New Hampshire and Vermont, opening offices in both states and expanding project work and capabilities. Multiple job opportunities are currently available in the region.
The growth builds on HNTB’s long history in the region. The firm has served as the general engineering consultant to the Maine Turnpike Authority continuously since 1945, making it HNTB’s longest continuous client. HNTB has since expanded its work to support Maine’s Department of Transportation, New Hampshire’s Department of Transportation, Vermont’s Agency of Transportation and municipalities.
“Our growth across Northern New England has been built through strong project delivery, long-standing client relationships, along with listening to what our clients value and a commitment to the communities we serve,” said Matthew Hearn, HNTB Northern New England office leader and vice president. “That foundation allows us to support clients on larger, more complex projects while maintaining the close collaboration that has guided our work here for decades.”
Recent project work reflects the team’s expanding role across the region. In Maine, HNTB served as designer for the Ticonic Bridge project, a complex downtown bridge replacement. The firm is also supporting the Maine Turnpike Authority as program manager for its Portland Area Modernization. In New Hampshire, the firm is supporting the New Hampshire Department of Transportation with major capital planning and programming efforts. HNTB was the designer of record for the Memorial Bridge project, a vertical-lift bridge connecting Portsmouth to Kittery, Maine.
In Vermont, HNTB serves as owner’s representative for the Burlington-Winooski Bridge Replacement and has expanded its work with the Vermont Agency of Transportation. The firm now works with clients in Vermont on multiple projects and programs, covering disciplines including infrastructure development and delivery, public involvement, paving and engineering design for structures, geotechnical, roadway, traffic and rail projects. Over the past three years, HNTB has increased its presence in the state, establishing itself as a trusted design consultant to VTrans and expanding its ability to support transportation priorities.
HNTB has also tripled the size of its Bedford, New Hampshire, team in the last three years and named James “Jim” Marshall, formerly an executive with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, to lead its work in the state. “Local knowledge is essential to understanding our clients’ priorities and the communities their projects serve,” said Marshall. “Our Bedford team combines that understanding with HNTB’s national resources to help clients advance projects from planning into delivery.”
Other recent additions across Northern New England include Julie Nixon, a former executive with the U.S. Department of Transportation who serves as a senior project manager for program management at HNTB and supports innovation work for the Maine Turnpike Authority. The team also includes Patricia Shedd, a trusted project manager supporting HNTB’s work in Vermont who brings a strong track record of delivering excellence and value for her clients.
HNTB also maintains long-standing relationships with the University of Maine and the University of New Hampshire, where many Northern New England employees are alumni and regularly volunteer at mentoring and workforce development events.
To support its continued growth, HNTB is filling multiple positions across Northern New England. Candidates can explore current opportunities at https://www.hntb.com/careers/.
