HNTB celebrates groundbreaking of AirTrain Newark Replacement Project at Newark Liberty International Airport

New 2.5-mile elevated transit system to transform passenger mobility and regional connectivity

NEWARK, N.J. (Oct. 7, 2025) – HNTB joined the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) in celebrating the groundbreaking of the transformative AirTrain Newark Replacement Program, an automated people mover train system linking Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) with the regional transit network.  HNTB is providing project management services and integration support, concept design development and design-build oversight review for the AirTrain Program.

The new AirTrain Newark will replace the original monorail system, which opened in 1996, with a state-of-the-art, 2.5-mile automated people mover system. Designed to meet future demand and improve reliability, the new system will connect EWR’s three passenger terminals, parking areas, car rental facilities and regional rail transit via the Northeast Corridor Rail Line, with seamless access to NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak services.

“This groundbreaking marks a significant milestone in the evolution of airport transit. The AirTrain Newark program reflects a commitment to delivering a modern, efficient system that improves how passengers move through Newark Liberty and connect to the broader region,” said Dan Leonhardt, HNTB project manager.

For the past decade, HNTB has supported the PANYNJ in shaping and advancing the AirTrain Newark Replacement Program. The firm has led the development of indicative design, advised on procurement and sustainability strategies and provided technical guidance throughout the program. HNTB also manages the guideway and stations project, helping to integrate it with rest of the program. Major construction is set to begin later this year, starting with the elevated guideway structure. First passenger service is anticipated in 2030.

HNTB’s contributions at EWR also extends to the EWR Station Access Project, which encompasses a new pedestrian entrance and landside connection to the Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station. HNTB served as the preliminary designer for this project. HNTB also designed the award-winning Recomposure Benches in Terminal C’s post-security recomposure area on behalf of United Airlines, helping improve the passenger experience for travelers passing through EWR Terminal C.

HNTB has supported the Port Authority’s broader strategy of world class aviation redevelopment by providing program management services across all three major PANYNJ airports − Newark, JFK and LaGuardia.
