LOS ANGELES (March 25, 2026) – Carmen C. Cham, AIA, has joined HNTB as managing principal for the firm’s transit architecture practice. In this role, Cham will lead a multidisciplinary group responsible for the design, development and delivery of transit architecture projects, working closely with clients and HNTB teams to advance rail and public transportation infrastructure and facilities across major metropolitan regions.

With more than 20 years of experience, Cham has held design and program leadership roles on some of the nation’s most significant transit initiatives. Her work includes major programs for Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Los Angeles World Airports and other agencies, including the LA Metro D (Purple) Line Westside Subway Extension, the LA Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension and Operations Campus and the Sepulveda Transit Corridor project. She also played a key leadership role on the LAX Automated People Mover program, overseeing architectural program management for multiple stations and transportation facilities within the airport’s Landside Access Modernization Program.
Cham’s portfolio includes work on multimodal mobility hubs, transit-oriented development, station modernization programs, wayfinding and large-scale transit facilities that prioritize passenger experience while supporting resilience strategies, operational performance and long-term system growth.
“Carmen is an accomplished leader with deep experience delivering innovative transit design and delivery in some of the most demanding environments” said David López Tomé, HNTB’s national architecture practice leader. “Her ability to guide multidisciplinary teams, build strong client relationships and mentor the next generation of designers will help us deliver meaningful mobility solutions for the communities we serve.”
“I’m thrilled to join HNTB and work alongside such a talented group of architects, planners and engineers,” Cham said. “Through thoughtful and innovative design, our projects have the power to transform our cities and reconnect communities. I look forward to partnering with our clients to realize their transportation vision and deliver world-class environments and infrastructure that improve everyday mobility and foster vibrant communities.”
Cham is an active member of the American Institute of Architects, the WTS International and the Urban Land Institute’s Los Angeles Mobility Council.
HNTB’s national transit architecture portfolio reflects a strong commitment to design and technical excellence, connectivity, community impact and operational performance. The firm is serving as basis of design architect for Newark Liberty International Airport’s AirTrain replacement program, which includes four new stations and a 2.5-mile automated people mover, and has completed designs for 13 Amtrak stations, bringing accessibility to communities from Mississippi to California.
The firm has also partnered with the West Virginia Parkways Authority to design three new travel plazas that combine distinctive architecture with sustainable performance, and in Los Angeles served as lead designer for the Metro K Line light rail project, expanding transit access and linking communities across the region, as well as designing station improvement projects to support the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
