As general engineering consultant, HNTB partnered with TxDOT to deliver transformational project and enhanced connectivity
CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. (July 2, 2025) – HNTB joins the Texas Department of Transportation and the local community in celebrating the opening of the new Harbor Bridge—an iconic infrastructure achievement that redefines the city’s skyline and strengthens regional connectivity.
As the general engineering consultant, HNTB partnered with TxDOT throughout the entire lifecycle of the project, providing comprehensive services from early planning and design support to construction oversight and traffic management to ensure the successful delivery of this complex infrastructure.
“This transformational project is a continuation of our decades long partnership with TxDOT, delivering infrastructure that meets both the needs of today and the demands of tomorrow,” said Summer Lawton, HNTB’s South-Central Texas office leader and senior vice president. “By expanding capacity and enhancing safety, the new Harbor Bridge will drive economic growth, improve mobility for residents and visitors, and enable the Port of Corpus Christi to accommodate larger vessels—solidifying its position as a global trade gateway.”
The project features a new cable-stayed main span—the longest in the United States—along with approach bridges, a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists, and a community plaza. It also includes the full reconstruction of the US 181/I-37/SH 286 interchange, 1.6 miles of IH 37 and one mile of the Crosstown Expressway.
