To enhance safety and mobility over the Port of Corpus Christi, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has replaced the existing, through-arch Harbor Bridge with a new, cable-stayed structure. With a 170-year life span, this bridge will serve the community for generations to come.
As the general engineering consultant, HNTB partnered with TxDOT throughout the entire lifecycle of the project, providing comprehensive services from early planning and design support to construction oversight and traffic management to ensure the successful delivery of this complex infrastructure.
Transforming a skyline and regional mobility
Solidifying its role as an iconic piece of Corpus Christi infrastructure, the new bridge brings new and updated safety, mobility and aesthetic features to the region. These features include:
- Six miles of replacement bridge deck
- New connecting roadways
- Safety improvements to median barriers and shoulders across six lanes of U.S. 181 traffic
- A mixed-use, pedestrian and cyclist path
- A community plaza, nighttime LED lighting and landscaping
- Increased clearance of 205 feet above water
By increasing capacity to accommodate future traffic and enhancing the movement of people and goods, the Harbor Bridge will serve as a safe, efficient transportation corridor and a lasting investment in the region’s future.
