HNTB, part of Milwaukee Transportation Partners, designed a complex interchange for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the City of Milwaukee.

HNTB’s cut-and-cover tunnels minimized the need for multiple levels of roadway, replaced seven highly skewed bridges, minimized scheduled closures, lowered the interchange from its previous height configuration and reduced project costs by $10 million.

In addition, the design team hosted 500 meetings to give local officials and citizens a voice in traffic impacts and design details. Through those meetings, MTP gained the public’s trust while low-cost design nuances helped the interchange fit into the neighborhood.

Delivered on budget and two months ahead of schedule, the Mitchell Interchange design met the purpose and need, providing long-range system improvement during the next 30 years.

•    Cut-and-cover tunnels reduce impact, cost
