Mountain America Stadium Renovation and Expansion

Since it opened in 1958, Arizona State University’s Mountain America Stadium — formerly known as Sun Devil Stadium — has played host to ASU football, NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, annual college bowl games, the Super Bowl and a visit from Pope John Paul II. However, the venerable stadium had not seen a significant renovation for 25 years until officials launched a $307 million program in 2014 to enhance the game day experience, aid recruiting and create a year-round community asset for Sun Devil Nation. In partnership with multistudio, HNTB’s national sports design team transformed the iconic stadium into an energized, connected, and world-class sports and entertainment venue.

Multiphase Construction without Interruptions to Operations: Phase 1 created a new student seating section and concourse at the south end zone. Phase 2 focused on the west and north sides, and includes 10 Founder’s Suites, two new premium club areas, a completely new lower bowl, and two new concourses with concessions and restrooms. The north end zone includes new seating, the Sun Deck Terrace, recruiting lounge and a 103,000-SF student-athlete sports performance center connected through the Tillman Tunnel.

Phase 2 also is an integrated a new 106,000-SF student-athlete facility that supports the sports performance, sports medicine and nutritional needs for ASU’s student-athletes within the north end zone of Mountain America Stadium.

The three-story facility includes a new strength and conditioning area, outdoor agility area, sports medicine/athletic training area, hydrotherapy room, cryotherapy pool area, dining facility with a full-service kitchen, football locker room, auditorium, team meeting rooms, coaches’ offices, academic center, equipment room, and loading dock.

Phase 3 east sideline construction, which opened ahead of the 2019-2020 football season, focused on a new east sideline club and loge seating area, new lower and upper seating bowl, and new concourse with concessions and restrooms.
