Miami-Dade County’s South Dade TransitWay Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor is a 20-mile, dedicated busway connecting Dadeland South Metrorail Station to Florida City. The project is the first to launch under the county’s Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan — a multimodal initiative to expand mobility across six key corridors and meet the needs of one of the fastest-growing regions in the U.S.
HNTB is delivering construction engineering and inspection (CEI) services, serving as the county’s representative throughout the construction phase. The firm also facilitates design coordination and leads stakeholder engagement efforts with key agencies, including the Federal Transit Administration, Florida Department of Transportation and five local municipalities.
A transformative transit solution
The South Dade TransitWay represents a pioneering advancement in bus rapid transit, combining safety, speed and innovation to revolutionize local mobility. As one of the first BRT systems in the country to feature rail-style crossing gates with arms that halt cross traffic at 46 intersections, buses travel safely and swiftly without stopping at lights.
Real-time arrival screens and mobile tracking solutions further enhance convenience, empowering passengers with precise, on-demand travel information. Operating with dependable 7.5-minute headways, the service ensures rapid, reliable connectivity throughout the corridor, facilitating seamless transfers to Metrorail, the backbone of the county’s comprehensive transit network.
By attracting more riders through improved convenience and predictability, this forward-thinking initiative actively reduces congestion and emissions, driving a significant mode shift toward sustainable transportation choices.
The South Dade TransitWay sets a new standard for bus rapid transit in the region. With HNTB’s support, the project provides a safe, fast and connected mobility experience that reflects Miami-Dade County’s commitment to sustainable growth and innovation.
