HNTB provided construction management and inspection services for Indianapolis’ Red Line, Indiana’s first bus rapid transit line and its first major transit project built in public right of way.
The project, operated by the Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation (IndyGo), connects 13.1 miles of the densest areas in downtown. The alignment runs from the Broad Ripple cultural district to the Indiana University Health Center, the state capitol and the University of Indianapolis.
HNTB’s scope of work was extensive, including bid review, contract documentation, construction inspection, schedule and cost analysis, public outreach, maintenance of traffic and extensive utility relocation management.
But the firm’s biggest success was helping IndyGo overcome a federal funding delay that put the project six months behind schedule. To accelerate construction, HNTB collaborated closely with contractors, negotiated change orders and managed schedules to deliver the project in just 15 months — two months ahead of the deadline and under budget.
