DriveOhio, an Ohio Department of Transportation initiative dedicated to advancing smart mobility, prioritized advancing the state’s electric vehicle infrastructure to give local and visiting EV drivers better access to charging facilities statewide.

HNTB collaborated with a multitude of state agencies to develop a data-driven, statewide strategy with an eye toward emerging EV charging technologies and trends. The goal was to better connect intercity travel and tourism while preparing Ohio’s roadways for a future with more EV drivers. HNTB also worked with utility providers and cooperatives to identify sites with access to adequate power.

The study identified charging station gaps and suggested new charging station locations that could be accessed quickly and easily along Ohio’s interstate highway corridors, at major attractions and at state facilities. Key benchmarks and outcomes for installation were developed to keep the project on target.

The study is a roadmap to create a more robust statewide network of charging stations that reduce EV range anxiety, connect more destinations and support Ohio’s goal to increase its smart mobility.
