The North End Around Taxiway (NEAT) Program at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is a transformative airfield infrastructure initiative improving safety, reliability and performance—positioning CLT to meet rising travel demand.
This multi-phase initiative includes six major construction projects aimed at reducing runway crossings and optimizing aircraft flow.
As program management consultant, HNTB provided program management and project support services, including scheduling, risk management, budget management, digital construction management support, planning and document control services.
Supporting Growth with Purpose-Built Infrastructure
The centerpiece of the airfield improvement program is a new end-around taxiway located north of Runway 18C/36C. This vital infrastructure creates a direct link between the western runway and the terminal ramp, reducing delays and enhancing operational efficiency as the airport prepares for continued growth.
As part of the program, HNTB also supported the relocation of CLT’s beloved Overlook—a longstanding feature that connects the airport to the local community. Its relocation makes space for current and future expansion efforts while preserving its legacy as a popular gathering place. With improved views and upgraded amenities, the park will continue to serve as a welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike.
To further accommodate CLT’s expanding airfield, HNTB provided program management support for the design and construction of an important state highway relocation. These enhancements ensure smoother vehicular traffic flow and seamless integration with ongoing airfield improvements, creating a more efficient and community-centered transportation hub.
As the cornerstone of CLT’s long-term airfield development strategy, the new taxiway is delivering measurable improvements in airfield operations, enabling increased capacity and streamlined aircraft movement for years to come.
