VDOT’s design-build project adds 14 miles to highly congested corridor
HNTB was lead designer, working with design-build joint-venture contractor Fluor-Lane, for the Capital Beltway/I-495 HOT Lanes project. HNTB was responsible for all engineering efforts during concept, preliminary and final design in the development of high-occupancy toll lanes along a 14-mile section of Northern Virginia’s Capital Beltway, one of the most congested stretches of roadway in the country.
HNTB also developed innovative congestion management techniques and design concepts that will allow the roadway to adapt to future demand by encouraging carpooling and transit use as well as HOT lane access.
The Capital Beltway Express has an agreement with the Virginia Department of Transportation to design, build, operate, finance and maintain the HOT lanes project for 75 years. The partnership enables Virginia to leverage private capital and public funds.
