The award recognizes Dippel’s exceptional leadership, technical excellence and her commitment to advancing women and innovation in the transportation industry.

HNTB’s Michelle Dippel
Over her 20-year career with HNTB, Dippel has risen from senior environmental planner to her current role leading one of the firm’s fastest-growing business units, overseeing more than 2,000 employees and transformative infrastructure programs across 12 states. She has worked in every region of the firm and her executive leadership has shaped outcomes for clients across the country including the Texas Department of Transportation, Austin Transit Partners, Amtrak, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Brightline West, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and California High-Speed Rail Authority.
In 2022, Dippel became the first woman appointed to HNTB’s board of directors, inspiring more women to pursue executive pathways in the industry.
Dippel’s influence extends beyond project delivery and client service. She has championed mentorship and inclusive leadership through organizations — including WTS, ARTBA, American Council of Engineering Companies and Transportation Research Board — and has led HNTB teams to multiple Employer of the Year awards from WTS chapters. Her advocacy for women’s advancement and innovation has earned her recognition as a sought-after speaker and mentor.
“Michelle’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing our industry sets a powerful example for all of us at HNTB and beyond. Her dedication to innovation, mentorship and the advancement of women in transportation has made a lasting impact on our firm and the communities we serve,” said Rob Slimp, HNTB CEO. “We are incredibly proud to see Michelle honored with the Ethel Birchland Award and celebrate her as a trailblazer who inspires the next generation of leaders.”
ARTBA’s Ethel Birchland Award is named for the association’s former executive director and honors women who demonstrate outstanding leadership and long-term service in transportation design and construction, with a particular focus on advancing innovation and other women leaders.
