New pedestrian bridge reconnects Pittsburgh neighborhoods with local park
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (June 20, 2025) – HNTB joined the City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, Mayor Ed Gainey, community members and project stakeholders to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the newly completed Davis Avenue Pedestrian Bridge. The event marked the official opening of the bridge, which replaces the original bridge constructed in 1898 and restores a vital connection between the Brighton Heights neighborhood and Riverview Park, the largest city park in Pittsburgh’s Northside.
“This bridge represents more than a physical structure — it symbolizes a commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of residents by reconnecting them to a key community resource,” said Jeremy Colello, PE, HNTB’s Pennsylvania office leader and senior vice president.
HNTB served as the designer for this project, developing bridge, roadway and drainage recommendations — collaborating with local stakeholders and the surrounding community — and providing documentation and ongoing support throughout construction.
Built on the existing abutments, the new bridge features a 12-foot-wide pedestrian and bicycle pathway, weathered steel truss design that pays homage to the original structure, enhanced lighting, landscaping, streetscaping and a local art piece to create a welcoming gateway into Riverview Park.
