Seasoned tunnel expert brings three decades of expertise in complex tunnel delivery
OAKLAND, Calif. (Nov. 6, 2025) — HNTB Corporation announces the addition of Derek Penrice, PE, CEng, as national practice consultant. Penrice brings more than three decades of experience in tunnel and underground infrastructure design, project and program management and construction services for transportation and utility projects across North America and internationally.
Penrice has led the tunnel design and construction for major transit, rail, highway and water infrastructure programs. His expertise spans tunnel boring machine (TBM) and sequential excavation method (SEM) tunneling, immersed tube and cut-and-cover tunnels, waterproofing systems, deep shafts and excavation support systems. He also has contributed to tunnel performance standards and served in advisory roles for numerous complex projects.

Penrice is active in the Institution of Civil Engineers, the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association and the Underground Construction Association, where he has served on the organizing committee for the North American Tunneling Conference and chaired the 2022 event.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland and is a licensed Professional Engineer in multiple U.S. states.
