Designed by HNTB, the Victory Heights Arena and Sports Performance Center at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) is a transformative investment in Olympic sports and student-athlete wellness. It replaces the Fitzgerald Field House while establishing a new, campus-integrated model for collegiate athletic performance.

The university’s primary design challenge was twofold: to deliver a modern, right-sized competition venue for Olympic sports like volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling, and to create a centralized training and support environment for Pitt student-athletes, elevating both daily performance and long-term recruiting potential across the athletics department.

A Complex Site, Reconnected to Campus

Set within a complex topographical site with critical campus adjacencies, the project is carefully embedded into Pitt’s existing pedestrian networks and surrounding developments. The design was guided by a “be a good neighbor” philosophy, ensuring the facility functions not only as an athletics destination, but as a connective social and civic asset for the broader campus community. A fully accessible green roof above the arena seamlessly extends the campus landscape, providing a new gathering space for students and maintaining established circulation routes through the site.

Architecture Shaped by Movement

Architecturally, Victory Heights is expressed as two distinct yet connected volumes that form a single building: the Sports Performance Center to the west and the arena to the east.

Between the two masses, a central wedge space anchors the public entry sequence, preserving long-standing pedestrian movement through the site while creating a new public square for entry into the arena and adjacent Petersen Events Center. Above, a pedestrian bridge spans this space, linking the green roof gathering space to the performance center and incorporating programmable lighting that extends Pitt’s game day traditions into the architecture.

The Sports Performance Center: A Holistic Training Environment

Inside the Sports Performance Center, student-athlete well-being is the organizing principle. Dedicated training spaces for gymnastics, volleyball, wrestling and spirit squads are supported by sports medicine, strength and conditioning, nutrition, and mental health services, bringing together 16 of Pitt’s 19 varsity programs within a single, highly integrated environment.

Natural light reaches every primary training space, reinforcing both physical and mental performance, while amenities such as hydrotherapy, an outdoor training area and a centralized student-athlete lounge support recovery, holistic development and social connection. A central connecting stair links four of the building’s six levels and brings daylight into the building to encourage movement and visual connection across levels, reinforcing a culture of activity and shared purpose.

A Right-Sized Arena for Olympic Sports

The arena provides a contemporary, 3,000-seat home for Pitt’s volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling programs, designed for adaptability. A telescopic lower bowl supports a range of event configurations, while modern game presentation technologies, including LED lighting, ribbon boards and a center-hung videoboard elevate the fan experience. Team-focused amenities, such as a dedicated game day locker room and an immersive team hype tunnel leading to the court, strengthen game day identity and recruiting appeal, while additional features like a membership club and frictionless concessions further serve fans in attendance.

Together, these elements position Victory Heights as a game-changing facility for Pitt Athletics and the university as a whole, raising the standard for Olympic sports training environments at the collegiate level while reinforcing the university’s broader commitment to design excellence, campus connectivity and student experience.
