From concept to completion, HNTB delivered a future-ready corridor that enhances safety, mobility and economic growth in Southeastern Wisconsin
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (July 15, 2025) — HNTB joined the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), local officials and community members to commemorate the completion of the I-43 North-South Freeway—a transformative infrastructure upgrade that enhances safety, improves mobility and boosts economic vitality in southeastern Wisconsin. The milestone was marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Spanning 14 miles between Silver Spring and SH-60, this critical corridor—one of the busiest in the state—was expanded from four to six lanes. The project also included the reconstruction of five interchanges, addition of a diverging diamond interchange, replacement of a Union Pacific railroad bridge and five major box culvert crossings.
HNTB partnered with WisDOT throughout the full lifecycle of the I-43 North-South Freeway project, delivering comprehensive services from early environmental documentation and preliminary engineering to final design, construction engineering and inspection, traffic management and public involvement.
“The successful completion of the I-43 North-South Freeway stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved through vision, collaboration and commitment,” said T.J. Dougherty, HNTB’s Wisconsin office leader and vice president. “This high-performing, future-ready corridor improves safety and mobility, strengthens connections between neighborhoods and businesses, and supports the long-term prosperity of communities across southeastern Wisconsin.”
