Committed to improving the state’s pedestrian and bicyclist paths, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) partnered with HNTB to develop a new Bicycle & Pedestrian Analysis Support System (BiPASS). Supporting the DOT's efforts to deliver data-driven infrastructure improvements, the system will play a key role transforming bike and pedestrian travel in Wisconsin.

BiPASS, the AI-driven machine-learning tool, assimilates large internal and third-party datasets, including route quality, residential and commercial developments, demographics, optimal routing, predicted travel volumes and anticipated destinations.

BiPASS can test multiple scenarios and dynamically predict the number of bikers or pedestrians who would benefit from improvements to a given path or sidewalk. Those insights allow WisDOT to quantify the cost benefits of proposed projects. The agency then can prioritize its infrastructure improvement projects, choosing to invest in those that deliver the greatest user value.
