Sorel is responsible for leading and growing HNTB’s presence across the state
MINNEAPOLIS (April 13, 2020) – Thomas Sorel, former commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Transportation and director of the North Dakota Department of Transportation, has been named HNTB Corporation’s office leader for the firm’s Minneapolis office.
Sorel, a vice president, brings more than 40 years of public- and private-sector transportation leadership experience to the role. As Minneapolis office leader, he leads more than 50 multi-disciplinary professionals committed to improving mobility across the state through highway, bridge, toll, aviation and transit projects, as well as emerging transportation technologies. Sorel oversees all office operations, including business development, planning, recruitment and retention.
Prior to HNTB, Sorel managed Minnesota operations for another transportation consulting firm. He began his career in 1978 with the Federal Highway Administration, serving for 30 years in a variety of leadership positions, including the Mega Projects and Contracts Administration Office and the Office of Policy in Washington, D.C. As FHWA’s Minnesota Division administrator in 2007, Sorel received the Presidential Honor for his role organizing federal response, recovery and rebuilding efforts after the I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis. In addition to spearheading MnDOT and NDDOT, Sorel also has led AAA Minneapolis, successful transportation consulting start-ups and the U.S. Department of Transportation team responsible for building infrastructure in Salt Lake City for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
“Tom’s accomplished career and his extensive relationships in the marketplace will be enormously beneficial to HNTB’s growing Minneapolis office and to our clients and partners across the region who are committed to improving its mobility,” said Chris Gale, PE, president of HNTB’s Great Lakes Division.
HNTB works on some of the Minneapolis region’s most significant transportation projects, serving as designer for the 3rd Avenue Bridge rehabilitation, Franklin Avenue Bridge rehabilitation and Metro Transit’s Orange Line, and program manager for Metro Transit’s Gold and Rush Lines bus rapid transit. Other key projects across HNTB’s Great Lakes Division include O’Hare Airport’s Runway 9C-27C, the HOP Streetcar in Milwaukee and the Smart Columbus smart cities initiative in Ohio.
Sorel has been active in several industry associations. He was the North Dakota representative for the Governors Highway Safety Association and served on the executive boards for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the Transportation Research Board. He also served on the boards of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America, the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Minnesota and the Independent Transportation Network of America.
Sorel earned a Master of Business Administration from Thomas College and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the State University of New York, Buffalo.
