Mary Clayton joins HNTB as principal planner in Charlotte

Decades of transportation, engineering and planning experience in the region will help clients and communities advance critical transportation infrastructure projects

CHARLOTTE (Nov. 17, 2020) – Mary Clayton has joined HNTB Corporation in Charlotte as a principal planner. Clayton’s career spans more than 30 years in North Carolina and includes extensive experience in project development, transformative transportation initiatives, mobility, grant and administrative management, as well as budget and fiscal planning for public, private and non-profit organizations and state and local governments. She will support HNTB client and community initiatives across the region.

Some of the innovative and transformative transportation initiatives Clayton has led in North Carolina include the I-40 Congestion Management Plan, completed for former North Carolina Secretary of Transportation Lyndo Tippett; the state’s first Traffic Demand Management Ordinance in Durham; and the state’s first Multimodal Plan, completed for former Deputy Secretary of Transportation Jim Westmoreland.

Prior to joining HNTB, Clayton worked for other transportation consulting firms in the Carolinas successfully advocating for transportation funding from state and local entities. Clayton holds a bachelor’s degree in history and education from the University of South Carolina and a master’s degree in urban geography from the University of North Carolina. She also completed the Management and Development Program at the University of North Carolina.

Clayton is the former president of the Charlotte Chapter of Women’s Transportation Seminar. Gov. Roy Cooper appointed her to North Carolina Turnpike Authority’s board of directors and she is a member of the authority’s operations committee. In 2005, Clayton received the Governor’s Award for Public Transportation as a tribute to her contributions to improving transit and her outstanding work in the industry.
