HNTB’s Bellevue office earns prestigious award for its community involvement
BELLEVUE, Wash. (Jan. 25, 2020) – HNTB Corporation was recognized by the Washington chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies as its 2020 Diversity and Inclusion Award winner, taking home the award last night in the large firm category at ACEC Washington’s 53rd annual Engineering Excellence Awards.
Regarded as the “Academy Awards” of engineering, the Engineering Excellence Awards honor engineering firms for their accomplishments and contributions to the industry, including the efforts of design professionals and their clients.
“We are truly honored to be recognized by ACEC Washington with this distinguished award,” said Kevin Collins, PE, HNTB Seattle office leader and vice president. “Our firm is committed to fostering a culture of diversity, inclusion and respect for others, which is not only reflected in our core values, but also demonstrated in our business practices and our workforce. We believe that our clients are best served when we provide solutions that are reflective of the communities in which our projects touch, and we live and work. We are excited for our continued work in promoting and advancing diversity and inclusion in our workplace.”
HNTB’s community involvement includes partnering with advocacy organizations such as Women’s Transportation Seminar, Conference of Minority Transportation Officials, Tabor 100 and Washington State Opportunity Scholarship. HNTB also has demonstrated its commitment to local small businesses through implementation of its Partners Program, which facilitates connections to strengthen business partnerships. Established 10 years ago, this program has successfully supported small, minority and disadvantaged businesses around the country.
HNTB has established an internal task force dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion. Consisting of a representative cross-section of employees, the task force identifies actionable ways to improve and maintain diversity and inclusion in the workplace, reviews company policies, and considers additional training and recruiting programs to implement.
HNTB also offers flexible work arrangements and creative benefits. This past year, HNTB instituted a program for new mothers to facilitate transition by easing their return to the workplace following maternity leave. HNTB’s I-405 project office extended a client’s initiative allowing mothers to bring infants under the age of six months to work with them.
In addition, HNTB has an internal mentoring program called SEA-Mentoring that focuses on attracting and retaining talent by fostering generational diversity through mentoring pairs. The goal is to create a supportive office culture that results in enhanced professional growth and leadership skills for employees, a stronger network of relationships for career advice, and improved succession planning. Mentees and mentors meet regularly over a year for organized luncheons and social events.
