HNTB partners with Mineta Transportation Institute to increase career opportunities in the transportation industry

Partnership seeks to increase access for individuals facing systemic barriers and burdens

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Aug. 15, 2024)HNTB, a leading infrastructure solutions firm, is proud to continue its partnership with San Jose State University’s Mineta Transportation Institute, an organized research and training unit, to foster the next generation of transportation professionals. This collaboration aims to increase diversity and inclusion within the transportation industry by sparking early interest and broadening the pipeline of future professionals through initiatives like the Mineta Summer Transportation Institute and the HNTB Spark Scholarship.

Each summer, the Mineta Summer Transportation Institute invites high school students from the Bay Area to San José State University for a three-week, immersive program. During the program, students earn college credit while learning about various aspects of the transportation industry through academic lectures, hands-on projects, and field trips. HNTB professionals contribute their expertise by conducting workshops introducing students to real-world applications of transportation principles through hands-on activities, holding panel discussions on various transportation and infrastructure career opportunities, and coaching students on how to successfully secure internships.

“HNTB’s support has been instrumental in empowering a diverse group of students,” said Karen Philbrick, executive director of the Mineta Transportation Institute. “Together, we are positively impacting the next generation of transportation leaders.”

HNTB’s Spark Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who is earning a Master of Science in the Transportation Management Graduate Program at Lucas College and Graduate School of Business at San José State University. The scholarship supports students facing significant challenges, including first-generation college students and those from underserved communities. By providing tuition assistance and professional mentoring, HNTB and MTI are removing barriers to education and illuminating opportunities, ultimately leading to careers in transportation. The 2024 scholarship was recently granted to a deserving student, continuing the tradition of supporting those who demonstrate significant potential and dedication in the transportation field.

“The HNTB Spark Scholarship and our involvement in Mineta’s Summer Transportation Institute are tangible manifestations of our commitment to an inclusive industry where innovative solutions can flourish,” said Shannon Gaffney, HNTB’s Northern California and Nevada office leader and vice president. “Our partnership with MTI helps ensure our infrastructure and transit solutions are as diverse as the communities we serve.”
