Florida transportation veteran brings extensive technology experience and strong relationships throughout the state
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Jan. 22, 2020) – Derek Barrs joined HNTB Corporation as senior program manager, based in the firm’s Tallahassee office. He provides management and coordination services on a wide range of emerging technology projects, leveraging expertise gained during tenures as chief of Florida Highway Patrol/Office of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement and chair of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Enforcement and Industry Modernization Committee.
Barrs has over 28 years of experience with commercial vehicle operations, safety and mobility initiatives.

Barrs supports HNTB’s work with the Florida Department of Transportation Central Office involving commercial vehicle safety and operations; traffic incident management; emergency preparations; emerging technology development and deployments; and local, state and national policy coordination related to commercial vehicle mobility.
Barrs earned a Bachelor of Science in public administration from Flagler College. He is an accomplished professional with numerous certifications, including State Law Enforcement Certification, FDOT Management Certification, Cyber Security Certification, Electronic Monitoring and Mapping Technology Certification, and many others.
He also is involved in numerous professional organizations, including the Jacksonville Transportation Club, Southern State Law Enforcement Partners Safe DRIVE Initiative, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and many others.
