Andrew Tunnard joins HNTB as director, strategic initiatives

Former NJDOT assistant commissioner brings more than three decades of service, leadership and a strong track record of delivering infrastructure solutions


PRINCETON, N.J. (Sept. 28, 2023) HNTB announced today that Andrew Tunnard, has joined the firm as director, strategic initiatives and associate vice president. He brings more than three decades of experience providing leadership, developing innovations and delivering solutions to complicated technical and management challenges.

In this new role, Tunnard will be working with and through others and focusing on growing HNTB’s business in resiliency, asset management, strategic planning, organizational optimization, mobility safety and equity, and growing Digital Infrastructure Solution practice. He will work with clients in New Jersey and across the firm.

Prior to joining HNTB, Tunnard served the State of New Jersey as assistant commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation, working with four different NJDOT commissioners. Over the past 12 years at NJDOT, he filled multiple roles, including executive director. During his tenure there, he implemented a new Transportation Asset Management System; orchestrated a complete re-organization of NJDOT Operations Division; served as field commander for Super Storm Sandy recovery; and NJDOT’s statewide winter operations chief.

During his career, Tunnard has held multiple leadership roles, including serving as a commander in the U. S. Navy where he held responsibilities as a chief engineer and surface warfare officer.

Tunnard holds an MBA from Marywood University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science from Virginia Military Institute. He also is past-president and current board member of the Intelligent Transportation Society of New Jersey.
