Andrew Foden joins HNTB’s national bridge practice

Industry leader will further strengthen the firm’s formidable roster of bridge structure expertise

Lawrenceville, N.J. (Jan. 25, 2023) – Andrew Foden, PhD, PE has joined HNTB as national bridge practice consultant and vice president. Based in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Foden is a known leader and expert in all aspects of bridge design, evaluation, rehabilitation, testing and analysis on bridge projects from conception to construction. He has a particular strength and expertise in the use and application of ultra-high-performance concrete. Recently, he was the lead subject matter expert for the UHPC overlay project currently underway on the Delaware Memorial Bridge. This is the first application in the world of this technology on a suspension bridge. When completed, it will set a record in the United States for the largest use of UHPC on a single project.

“Andrew has an extensive career in structural engineering and proven expertise in developing innovative approaches to complex bridges across the nation,” said Ted Zoli, HNTB senior vice president and national bridge practice consultant. “We are fortunate to add Andrew to our bridge team and know that his unique skills and knowledge of bridge technology will be an added benefit for our clients.”

Prior to joining HNTB, Foden led the bridge evaluation and technology discipline group at another engineering firm, where he worked since 1998. During his time there, he held numerous expert and leadership positions on a variety of projects including most recently as project manager for the Pulaski Skyway rehabilitation project where he led a multi-disciplinary team in the successful restoration of the 80-year-old, 3.5-mile-long truss structure. He has extensive experience in emergency response work for complex structures, rapidly deploying structural health monitoring systems and conducting fast analysis of at-risk structures to ensure public safety. Foden is a leader in accelerated bridge construction and has served as a subject matter expert for the Federal Highway Administration on numerous bridge performance and analysis programs.

Foden received his PhD in structural engineering and his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University where he has served as an adjunct professor. He is a member of numerous professional industry organizations including the Transportation Research Board, the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, and the American Concrete Institute, where he currently serves as the Chair of the Bridge Design Committee and continues to work on the development of codes and design standards for ultra-high-performance-concrete. He has authored over 20 papers and delivered countless presentations at industry conferences and events.

“Andrew’s stature and respect in the industry is derived from his innovative thinking, professionalism and dedication to the field,” said John Barton, HNTB professional services chair. “These are just a few of the many reasons HNTB is proud to have him as part of the firm.”

Founded as a bridge firm more than 100 years ago, HNTB has unsurpassed technical excellence in all aspects of bridge design, funding and construction.
