Replacing the WALK bridge on the Nation’s Busiest Rail Corridor
Join this session to learn about the Connecticut Department of Transportation's ongoing $1.6 billion program to replace a 127 year-old, 564-foot long, 4-track movable swing span on Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven Line that connects Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. This case study will represent a mid-construction check-in to a program that began in 2014 and is expected to finish in 2029. The presentation will explore lessons learned, including when a project is really a program, alternative delivery methods, third parties, and stakeholder engagement. Learning Objectives: Evaluate the necessity of scope additions against the fundamental objectives established for the project/program. Establish and utilize a robust and effective lessons learned process for continual improvement. Perform regular, honest, self-assessments of cost and schedule, using defined metrics to avoid wishful thinking and unrealistic outcomes.
