HNTB worked with the Harris County Toll Road Authority in the first major overhaul of the Hardy Toll Road since it opened 27 years ago. The makeover, a total of nine projects along the 21-mile tollway, adds capacity to handle growth in northern Harris County. Included are connector ramps at the Grand Parkway and a third lane in each direction between the Grand Parkway and Farm-to-Market Road 1960.

HNTB engineered 10 of the bridges, which required widening to accommodate the additional lane. The firm also provided specialty engineering services to salvage and increase the service life of the existing bridge structures, which helped HCTRA avoid significant reconstruction, traffic impacts and loss of revenue.

HNTB also prepared the feasibility study and developed the plan to convert the cash system to all-electronic tolling.
