San Diego Convention Center Expansion
San Diego Convention Center Expansion

HNTB, as design architect in association with Tucker Sadler Architects of San Diego, designed the $216-million expansion to San Diego’s waterfront convention center. The project almost doubled the existing facility by adding 292,000 SF of on-grade exhibition space directly connected to the existing exhibition halls; a 40,706-SF ballroom; and 21 meeting rooms, comprising almost 60,000-SF of break-out space. The upper level ballroom is defined by a gracefully curved roof that plays off against the dramatic sail area, which became a much more effectively utilized space with the expansion. The expansion included a major prefunction space between the existing sail area and the ballroom. This prefunction space successfully connects the City and waterfront sides of the building to each other. A banquet kitchen, dedicated service corridors and 28 new truck docks support the new function areas.
