Designed by HNTB, the 365,000-SF Rhode Island Convention Center is an important component of Providence’s successful riverfront revitalization. The facility is part of mixed-use development that includes a 362-room hotel, office building and parking garage near the State Capital, historic downtown and Providence Place. The Convention Center includes a 100,000-SF exhibit hall, 17,000-SF of meeting rooms, a flexible 20,000-SF ballroom, a full-service kitchen and parking for 720 cars. Unique qualities of the Convention Center include its vertical organization on a tight downtown site, glass exterior wall, rotunda entrance, arcade, private-public partnership, air rights with exhibition space above a street, and integration with other major development. The architectural character of the Convention Center combines sensitivity to Providence’s historic architecture with a unique, contemporary statement appropriate to the building’s function and technology.
