HNTB is the program manager for the Illinois Tollway's $6.3 billion Congestion-Relief Program (CRP) - Open Roads for a Faster Future. The goal of this capital plan is to rebuild and restore nearly the entire Tollway system, which means widening and constructing 274 miles of existing highways and constructing a new 12.5 mile extension of a major corridor. During the past three years, 20 existing mainline toll plazas were converted to automated non-stop open road tolling, a schedule that was never attempted before, and the 12.5 mile extension of the Veterans Memorial Tollway has opened for business. It is projected that the Tollway capital plan will improve mobility in 12 counties, reduce daily commute times by 20 minutes a day, and will provide a positive economic benefit to local communities. The Tollway system grew to 286 miles of highways with the 2007 opening of the I-355 South Extension.
