The new Springfield Interchange is built in virtually the same footprint as the original structure, but designed to accommodate 500,000 vehicles per day. This project replaced the existing interchange and was divided into five construction contracts, including bridge demolition and replacements, as well as major utility relocations. Ultimately, the final design improved operations and safety, eliminated weaving, improved merging areas and relieved bottlenecks. In addition to improvements to the interstate roadway, approximately six miles of local arterials and streets were improved, including bridge widenings and bridge additions, major intersection reconfigurations, the design of 15 signalized intersections, street lighting and enhanced pedestrian facilities.
