As system manager of Tampa Bay SunGuide, HNTB has delivered continuity and ensured that phase one of the ITS project meets the department’s goal of safer, more efficient urban interstates. A relatively new concept, the system manager approach appealed to FDOT District 7, which was looking for innovative ways to deploy its ITS freeway management system, better known as Tampa Bay SunGuide. Operational in five of FDOT’s seven districts, state-of-the-art ITS technology detects congestion-causing traffic incidents in real time, which helps dispatch emergency crews and equipment, and reduce the time it takes to clear accidents.
