As project designer and construction administrator, HNTB designed the 5,000-foot runway that eventually was constructed across the approach ends of three other runways. The project’s contract documents contained a highly detailed phasing plan that the design team developed early in the process with input from both Massport and Federal Aviation Administration staff. The phasing plan allowed construction to be completed with minimal impact to daily aircraft operations at the airport. The project also included more than 1,000 feet of new taxiways, relocation of approximately 3,000 feet of existing taxiways, demolition of approximately 2,000 feet of existing taxiways and construction of a deicing apron.
