Moving forward with mileage-based user fees


New user fees based on vehicle miles traveled rather than by the gallons used are among the potential answers for surface transportation's current funding challenges.

 

Research from HNTB Corporation has shown nearly 3 in 10 Americans think the best way to introduce a VMT is with electric vehicles that don’t pay any gas tax.
 

HNTB's Jim Barbaresso, leader national Intelligent Transportation Systems services, provided his perspective in a white paper last year, outlining how the enabling technology for a mileage-based user fee will be in our cars and trucks this decade  electric or not and what it would take to implement it.

 

Since 2005 HNTB has been involved in a growing number of projects related to the national Connected Vehicle initiative, formerly known as IntelliDrive, including designing and building one of the first connected vehicle test beds with the Michigan Department of Transportation.
