Raymond J. McCabe receives 2011 Howard Award
McCabe recognized for bridge expertise and accomplishments

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 21, 2011) – Raymond J. McCabe, PE, national director of bridges and tunnels at HNTB Corporation, received the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Ernest E. Howard Award for his outstanding accomplishments, leadership and expertise in structural bridge engineering.
The award was announced Friday, Oct. 21, at the ASCE Annual Conference’s leadership breakfast in Memphis, Tenn.
Since joining HNTB in 1978, McCabe has become one of the nation’s most respected authorities on the structural design of long-span, movable, signature and complex bridges, having been associated with more than 400 projects during his career. As a recognized expert in the industry, McCabe, based in HNTB’s New York City office, has been involved in numerous award winning signature bridge projects, including the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge in Boston; the Blennerhassett Bridge in West Virginia; Dames Point Bridge in Jacksonville, Fla.; Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge in Omaha, Neb; and the Mississippi River Bridge in St. Louis.
McCabe is an advocate for improved bridge inspection and evaluation procedures and techniques, as well as a long term, well-funded program of bridge repair and replacement, having published several opinion pieces on these and other topics. He was invited to testify before the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Highways and Transit.

Ernest E. Howard Award
The Ernest E. Howard Award annually recognizes a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers who has made a definite contribution to the advancement of structural engineering through research, planning, design or construction. The award was instituted and endowed in 1956 in honor of Howard, past president of ASCE and his contributions in the civil engineering industry. Howard also was one of the founding partners of HNTB.
