Kansas City Convention Center Grand Ballroom Honored By AIA Central States Region
HNTB Architecture lead architect for innovative project
HNTB Architecture received a 2010 American Institute of Architects, Central States Region merit award for the Kansas City Convention Center Grand Ballroom. The AIA, Central States Region (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma) Design Awards recognize outstanding achievements in design and planning and encourages excellence in design and brings attention to works of distinction.
Award-winning projects were selected by a jury comprised of design leaders from across the region who selected the HNTB project from a field of entries. The Kansas City Convention Center Ballroom was recognized for excellence in architectural design, interior design and craftsmanship.
The team’s work on the Grand Ballroom was received high praise from the jury. The jurors lauded the “successful transitory space from day to night through the use of surface and night effects, the level of detail in the project and the great use of light and transitions of public space.”
Spanning eight lanes of Interstate 670, the 46,500-square-foot, state-of-the-art Grand Ballroom with its associated support and pre-function spaces, joins the northern section of downtown to the Crossroads arts district, the city’s soon-to-be-completed performing arts center and other revitalized portions of the south loop. Viewed as the “living room for the City,” the Grand Ballroom is utilized for national meetings and important community events.
