Aviation Architecture Core Practice Leader

Joseph L. Grogan, AIA LEED AP, vice president in the Los Angeles office and aviation architecture core practice leader, has more than 24 years of experience in the planning and design of new airport terminals and the renovation and expansion of existing terminals. During his career, he has worked at more than 65 airports throughout North America.
His expertise includes airport project management, planning and programming, design and construction administration for all passenger terminal facilities, including specialty systems (passenger and baggage security screening, baggage handling, passenger loading bridges, 400Hz, preconditioned air, signage, FIDS/BIDS and people movers). His work has included extensive coordination with airport personnel, FAA, TSA, CBP and other government agencies, airlines, concessionaires, special equipment vendors and other stakeholders. He has been recognized in the aviation industry through numerous publications, speeches at aviation conferences and built projects throughout North America.
Since joining HNTB in 1984, Grogan’s major projects have included the terminal development program for the Santa Barbara Airport in California, the Los Angeles International Airport master plan, the Tucson International Airport terminal expansion, the Anchorage International Airport South Terminal seismic and security and retrofit project, the Salt Lake City International Airport Phase I development program, the Portland International Airport expansion and reconstruction project, Oakland International Airport terminal expansion program, and the Vancouver International Airport new international terminal.
Grogan earned a bachelor’s degree in design and a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Florida. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
