National Director of HNTB's Tunnel Practice

Hugh Caspe, PE, vice president and national director of HNTB’s tunnel practice, has led the technical efforts associated with all HNTB tunneling work and advanced the firm as a leader in the tunneling industry. Caspe has served as project adviser on the award-winning Minneapolis-St. Paul Light Rail Tunnel and Station; Caltran’s Devil’s Slide Tunnel in Calif.; Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s Port Washington Road Sewer Tunnel; Sound Transit’s North Link in Wash.; the City of Dallas’ Tunnel Program Management Contract and the Washington State DOT's Alaska Way Tunnel in Seattle.
Because of Caspe’s exceptional reputation in understanding and managing large, complex underground construction projects, HNTB was selected by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for the high-profile construction management contract at the World Trade Center in New York. In addition, Caspe played a major role in identifying cost saving measures, which led to HNTB winning the Cincinnati Wet Weather Management Program project with the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati.
Over his 43-year career, Caspe has been a prolific writer of technical articles and spoken at numerous conventions and workshops, including the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Conference on Transportation Construction Management. He is a contributing author of the book “Subsurface Condition, Risk Management and Construction Management Professionals” and has been quoted several times an as industry expert in Engineering News-Record.
Caspe, who is in the Boston office, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from City College of New York. He has chaired technical committees with several national professional societies, including the Boston Society of Civil Engineers, the American Consulting Engineers Council, Massachusetts Section, the Underground Technical Research Council and the American Underground Construction Association.
