Standing tall in the state of New Jersey, a state-of-the-art infrastructure solution has transformed the NJTA’s traffic management operations.

Providing full design, construction and ITS systems integration services, HNTB played a significant role in the delivery of the 28,000-square-foot statewide traffic management center and a three-story addition to an existing New Jersey Turnpike Authority administration building.

The multi-agency center will operate around the clock. Fully staffed, the center houses more than 50 personnel from the state department of transportation, state police operations and New Jersey Turnpike.

Personalized for the client’s needs

The building’s innovative design directly impacts the NJTA’s efficiency of interagency operations. With a 57-station operations floor, including an 18- by 50-foot DLP® video wall that has real-time displays of highways from 420 traffic cameras within New Jersey, staff can better ensure the safety and efficiency of the state’s traffic. Built-in acoustical sound walls, white noise systems at each station console as well as radio touch screens are features that allow dispatchers to communicate simultaneously and without distraction while on the floor. The center also includes 12 offices, and a large executive conference room overlooking the operations floor doubles as a “situation room” for state and federal officials.

Designed for sustainability and functionality

With complete building and design systems provided by HNTB, the project includes state-of-the-art technology and numerous sustainable design strategies throughout the facility. Photovoltaic solar panels and an intelligent building management system control all aspects of the building’s mechanical and electrical systems such as lighting, air conditioning and shading. Also included were a number of site improvements such as the addition of parking spaces, aesthetic light fixtures and the relocation of the helipad illuminated with LED landing lights.

With ITS integration overseen by HNTB, the center is equipped with fiber optic cabling throughout and a dual UPS system that can power the entire building for 30 minutes, as well as a 1.2-Megawatt generator that can power the building for up to 72 hours in the event of a power failure. The Traffic Management Center is a pure digital environment allowing for virtualization, scalability and future functional/operational upgrades without costly infrastructure changes.
